Jeannette Cuevas is our featured demo at Marie Callender's

Jeannette is a noted pastel artist not only locally and regionally, but on the national scene.  She won Best in Show for our 2012 Annual Exhibition and First in Show and People’s Choice in 2004, as well as Best in Show with the Texas Pastel Society in 2009. She has been a Pastel 100 finalist, won honorable mention at IAPS in 2011 and Grand Prize for Still Life & Floral Challenge for the International Artist magazine in 2010.  She has been published in numerous trade publications.

In San Antonio, she has been in the Western Art Show for three years, a featured artist at Cappy’s restaurant in San Antonio for five years, and had a solo exhibit for the Women’s Chamber of Commerce.  She was in a group exhibit at the Capitol Rotunda here, as well as numerous other exhibitions throughout the state.  She has a bachelor of science in art education from Texas State University.  After graduating she chose instead to begin her career as a Graphic Designer/Illustrator and continued in the advertising business for about 20 years.

A native Texan, Jeannette typically paints images from around where she lives. Working people, cactus, captivating images and gorgeous scenes are all part of the stories she paints through her art. She is fascinated by the beauty and simplicity of the everyday flow of living there and enjoys trying to capture the warmth and spirit of every aspect of it. Most of her images are covered in sunlight and as time goes on she finds herself gravitating more toward peaceful themes.

“The sunlight in my work represents a spiritual aspect of God for me,”  says Jeannette. “It illuminates all things and shows the true beauty that lies within each subject. Light can transform an otherwise unattractive object like cactus into a thing of glorious beauty. It not only reflects and refracts color like a prism off the surface but also reveals a glowing presence from within that emanates out from each subject”.

This is one reason she prefers using watercolor in her under paintings. “It is like a river of flowing color beneath a surface of glittering light which is the pure pigment of pastel”, says Jeannette. “The two mediums glow together and create an energy that is both mesmerizing and healing”.
